The Royals play their first game of the season on Thursday at home against the Chicago White Sox. With a new season comes a new roster. Of course, the Royals couldn’t keep every free agent they had because, it just wouldn’t have been a sustainable payroll with the small market the team fits into leading instead to signing, with Lucas Duda and Jon Jay. The Royals signed the best guys that they could with their budget to fill the positions of Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain. There were possible fixes in the minor leagues that would be cheaper, but sometimes experience trumps expense.

This year’s team will look quite similar to last year’s, but with some major pieces missing. To replace Eric Hosmer, the Royals signed Lucas Duda to a 1 yr/ $3.5M contract, only fixing the problem temporarily. Jon Jay takes over the open center field spot with a 1 yr/ $3M contract. These guys could have just been signed to give prospects more time to develop, or they could be temporary, or even long term, fixes. Either way, they will be part of the team on opening day. They are just two guys on the roster, what about the rest? Well, it doesn’t look a whole lot different from my last prediction, aside from the few guys from the minors I used to replace lost assets. The new acquisitions replace the original guys I put in.

Salvador Perez tore his MCL while helping his family move, effectively putting him out for at least 4 weeks.  Due to his injury, Perez obviously can’t start, making Drew Butera the starter. In the backup role Cam Gallagher will get another call up stint.

There isn’t a single guy on my roster who isn’t currently (well, at 9:00 A.M. Thursday morning) on the active roster. Most of the guys have made a team out of spring training or have played in the majors before. Every guy has the potential to step up this season and help the Royals become the underdog.
