April Student of the Month
Academic student of the month is a merit based recognition system, which means a student must meet one or more of the proper qualifications as observed and nominated by the faculty to receive the award. Those qualifications include exceptional performance in the classroom and academic realm, willingness to help others academically, leadership in the classroom, and improved academic performance. There is also an option for the teacher to select “other” during the nomination process and include an outside reason for their nomination of the student. All nominations remain anonymous. In the month of March 2018, two students stood out in this aspect: senior Garrett Mills and freshman Alyse Moore.
Mills was nominated for two of the five categories provided to teachers. Those included exceptional academic performance and ability and helping others academically.
The teacher who nominated Mills said, “[He] is involved in numerous activities at LHS, and it seems like the young man never has a moment to take a break. But that doesn’t stop him from helping others.” To provide an example, the week when Louisburg High School’s Forensics program hosted a tournament, the teacher recognized the work Mills put in saying, “This [behavior] was very evident last week when he was all caught up in Calculus class and decided to use his free time to help set up the Forensics Tournament. I don’t know too many folks that would choose that over popping in their ear buds and vegging out. He’s an outstanding young man who is very worthy of being honored.”
Mills commented saying that the “recognition is an honor” and he would like to thank the nominating teacher ”for making my last month at LHS a memorable one.”
Moore was selected for the female student of the month based on four of the given options. Those included exceptional performance in the classroom and academic realm, willingness to help others academically, leadership in the classroom, and improved academic performance.
The nominating teacher sang high praise of Moore saying she “never settles for less than her best!” The teacher went on to applaud Moore’s work ethic and classroom interaction.
“She is the first student to work on corrections (even when her original score was already high), she asks great questions, and she genuinely wants to help her peers push through their struggles and difficulties in order to understand math. She’s involved with multiple sports, which has caused her to leave my class early quite often, yet she never misses a deadline. She is mature and organized beyond her years. A young woman with a work ethic like hers deserves to be honored!”
“This is very special to me because in my family, grades are very important. My parents are always pushing me to do my best in sports and academics and I am very thankful for that because it really pays off. Thank you to the teacher who voted for me and for noticing the people who are working hard!” Moore said.
Students who also received nominations include Kiefer Tucker, Matt Allen, Wyatt Reece, Connor Koesser, Bailey Sarna, Maddie Lewis, Natalie George, and Aubrey Galloway.
