The Lady Cats cheer squad completed their tryouts on Friday, April 13 in the aux gym, with 20 of 26 girls who tried out making the squad according to coach Dana Shaffer. Those making the squad include 2018-19 seniors Billie Casebeer, Hallie Hutsell, Addie Katzer, Kaitlyn Lewer, Leia Shaffer, and Shaylor Whitham; juniors Ashlyn McManigal, Brooklyn Mitchell, Lexi Pena, Gabby Tappen, and Lauren Vincent; sophomores Jydan Amren, Cecilia Bindi, Andrea Gaza, and Eleanor Willming ; and freshmen Lacie Kallevig, Sammy McDaniel, Anna Morrison, Jayden Trester, and Brielle White.

Mitchell said, “I feel excited about making the team because each year is filled with different adventures and new people that I know I’ll become close to.”

There was a two-day clinic the week of tryouts where the participants learned the cheer, dance and chant and were scored on their stunting ability. Then an open gym was held where anything learned the previous two days could be perfected. On that Friday, everyone was randomly given a number. The matching number groups of three went into the aux gym and performed their routine for a group of college cheer judges.

“This being my last tryout was kind of a bittersweet moment. Knowing that I no longer have to deal with the stress of tryouts ever again was a weight off my shoulders, but at the same time after 6 years of cheer tryouts and this being my last one made this the first of many lasts that we being seniors next year will experience,” Whitham said.

The squad is determined the Spring prior to the season because practices start over the summer and the Little Cheer Camp is also held in the summer.  They also perform routines on PASS day at the pep rally to begin the year and performances at football games. The squad has new ideas that they will implement to get the crowd more involved at games.

“We have a very well rounded squad and we are ready to put in the work to get the results we want!” Shaffer said.
