KSHSAA 4A State Debate Tournament is a scene Grayson Anderson and Isabelle Holtzen have visited before. After the pair earned third place at state as sophomores in two speaker debate, they returned this year and accomplished the same goal, earning them the February student spotlight.

“Isabelle and I were very excited to go to state debate this year,” said junior Grayson Anderson.

The duo also accomplished a 100% win rate during the debate pre-season. Their combined win record also totaled high with 93%. They completed a successful season by adding another third place trophy in the display cases.

Their success can be attributed to the ability to have a debate class as well. “I really enjoy the ability to have civilized discussions like I can in debate; it provides a great learning environment,” said Anderson.

While not impossible to participate in debate without taking the class, at this time the future of a three year run at state seems in question for the duo as Holtzen has decided not to take debate her senior year.

Holtzen said, “I’m actually not going to take the debate course next school year.”
